When will the Android 8.0 oreo update be released? The new Android Oreo has been released. Comparison with Nougat. Photo. Samsung update in February

August 2016 was marked by the release of the latest version of Google's mobile OS. They called her (Nougat). Since then, the company has presented several updated versions of the system: Android 7.1, 7.1.1, 7.1.2.
It can be assumed that the appearance of a new version Android O about the same time can be expected. According to the plan, the announcement of the new version should be expected on May 17th. The firmware will be presented at the Google I/O conference, which takes place every year. In this article we have collected all the information that has become available about the new update.

Also, the new operating system will receive adaptive icons.

What name will Android 8.0 (O) get?

Observing how the operating system develops allows us to conclude that in addition to the appearance of a new number “8”, each new version of Android also adds a letter.
You can also notice that the letters are selected in alphabetical order and under each of them the name of some sweet is hidden. So, marshmallow is encrypted under, the letter N is nougat. What Android O means is still anyone's guess.

Android 8.0 is Oreo?

Google may involve Oreo in a partnership. And in this case, the name of the popular Oreo cookie will be hidden under the name Android O. This is exactly what happened with Android 4.4, when the company chose the name of the KitKat chocolate bar as the name of its firmware. Or, the company will announce a vote based on the results of which the best version of the name Android 8, starting with the letter O, will be selected. Thus, the company acted by choosing a name for Android 7. Then many users voted for Nougat.

Android 8.0 release date

The announcement of the new version of Android 8.0 OS is expected in May 2017. This will be done at the Google I/O 2017 conference. Over the course of two days, during which this event will take place, information will be announced about what capabilities Android O will have and what new features it will have. The release of the update itself is expected a little later. It is expected that this will happen in the summer.

Can my smartphone be updated to Android O?

It must be said that against the backdrop of the spread of Android OS M and N, the forecasts cannot be called too rosy. It is very likely that the update will be available for the following phones: Nexus 5X, as well as Nexus 6P, since support for these devices is officially announced until September of this year.

But Nexus 9 and Nexus 6 will only be able to update to Android N, since Android O will not be available for them. This is due to the end of their support in 2016.

The Android 8.0 Oreo operating system was released by Google. The next wave of updates for smartphones from different manufacturers will begin soon. Which devices will be upgraded to G8 - read on Trashbox.

The article is being actively refined and updated with new information.

To start working on new firmware, you need a special tool - PDK (Platform Development Kit). This tool is created by Google for each new version of Android. Once the PDK is ready, Google sends it to Samsung and other smartphone and tablet manufacturers.

Then Google announces a new Android for users, and Samsung starts working on the firmware. On average, its creation takes 6 months, but the exact release date is unknown.

Samsung can't start working on the firmware until it receives the necessary tools from Google.

You can't get the firmware right away as soon as you hear about it - it needs to be adapted for a specific smartphone or tablet.

Why is the exact release date of the new firmware unknown?

Before answering this question, let's consider what the firmware consists of. The firmware consists of several parts:

Source- a new Android with basic functions, which is created by Google. This part cannot be immediately installed on any smartphone or tablet, because adapting the code to a specific device requires at least drivers.

If we imagine the creation of firmware using the example of building a building, then the source code is the frame of the new structure.

Drivers- help connect Android and the components that make up a smartphone or tablet: processors, memory, buttons, connectors, sensors and other chips. Drivers are written by chip manufacturers - Samsung and companies that produce only certain parts.

If manufacturers do not write a driver for at least one chip for the new firmware, the device will not be able to work normally with it. If the manufacturer of the mobile network communication chip does not write a driver, the smartphone will not be able to make calls. If the camera manufacturer does not write a driver, the smartphone will not take photographs. The firmware will not be released until all manufacturers write working drivers. Creating drivers takes 2 - 4 months.

Drivers are the cement for connecting the frame (Android) and the foundation (components), without it the building will collapse.

Device manufacturer services- are responsible for the appearance of the desktop, menu items, programs, unique applications and functions. Without them, all tablets and smartphones would look the same and have the same set of functions. This part of the code is written by Samsung.

Services are finishing materials: facing bricks, wallpaper, tiles, paint, parquet.

After all the parts are ready, Samsung's task is to combine them and make them workable. At this stage, the firmware is thoroughly tested to find and eliminate all errors. The total number of tests is several thousand times.

The final firmware must be approved by Google - it’s like accepting a building by a state commission. If she doesn't like something, the process continues until the desired option appears.

Nobody gives the exact date of the firmware appearance, because: a) several companies are working on it; b) the process lasts until complete adaptation and elimination of errors.

For which smartphones and tablets will the firmware be released?

New firmware is released for flagship devices within 18 months from the moment they go on sale.

Flagship devices are smartphones and tablets of the Galaxy S, Galaxy Tab S, Galaxy Note series, and some mid-segment models.

New firmware is not released for all devices.

Over time, firmware for a certain device is no longer released.

Below is a preliminary list of models that will receive updates to Android 9 (Pie), with approximate dates. Model list and release dates are subject to change.

Already received the update:

How to find out that new firmware has been released

If new firmware is available for your smartphone or tablet, a notification will appear at the top of the display.

A similar notification will appear if you connect the device to your computer and run the program Smart Switch.

If there is no notification, then: a) the firmware has not yet been released; b) there is something wrong with the device (the current firmware is installed incorrectly or modified, the device is not for sale in Russia). In the first case - wait, in the second - contact service center.

Where to download new firmware

Samsung does not make firmware publicly available. New firmware is installed through the device menu or program Smart Switch.

Android Nougat or 7.0.1 has officially received only less than 1% of all mobile devices of different brands. But already in May 2017, Google is preparing to introduce to the mobile world Android 8 under code name Android O. The new mobile OS will be presented on May 17 at the Shoreline Amphitheater near Google headquarters in California at the Google I/O conference.

There is also already an official tweet from Sundar Pichai, Google CEO, about the date and location of the conference:

Currently, the event page only reports the location, and a Google search itself returns the exact dates:

Google doesn't say much about Android 8.0. At the moment, it is known that the developer will increase stability and improve the protection of personal data, fix bugs and introduce a new user interface.

The site also hosts user voting, in which more than 5,500 people have already taken part. The most popular name for Android 8.0 among users is:

Android 8.0 announcement date is already clear, but when the first release of the version will take place is not known. Judging by the experience with Android Nougat, it took the Google team a little more than 3 months to finalize and release the finished release.

The most popular version of Android currently remains Lollipop, which runs on more than 33% of devices, while just over 30% of mobile phones run Marshmallow. The share does not exceed 1% - according to different sources, the figure varies from 0.7% to a critical 0.2%.

Google doesn't comment on new ones at all. functions and features of Android 8.0, experts suggest that smartphones running Android O will become smarter due to advanced assistants. Personal assistants will have access to a wider range of applications and user data.
