Cancel automatic updates on Android. How to disable Android auto-update

I'm tired of this endless update of Windows 7! Downloads and installs every day. Internet speed slows down, computer slows down, and reboots without asking. And this system doesn’t care whether I’m watching a movie, writing a term paper, or making an important report for management. And updates are installed for 2 hours, and do not allow you to turn off your PC or laptop.

And most importantly - there is almost no sense! Yes, vulnerabilities are eliminated, but you will not notice the difference at all BEFORE the update and AFTER it. Unless it eats up traffic and takes up space on the local C drive again. In general, complete hemorrhoids.

Therefore, if you are also tired of this option, turn it off! Especially for those who do not know how to disable updates on Windows 7, detailed instructions with screenshots are provided below.

There are 2 ways to turn off the annoying Windows 7 auto-update feature

First, let's look at turning off automatic updates on Windows 7. This is necessary so that the system does not download anything or start installation without your permission.

If you suddenly need to turn on the search for updates, then open the same window and select one of the first three items to choose from (whichever is more convenient).

However, after this, the message “Windows Update is disabled” will constantly pop up at the bottom of the screen (near the clock). Please turn it on."

So that it doesn't get boring:

Ready. You just removed this message, and you won't be bothered by it anymore.

Method 2: Windows Update

For this:

Ready. You have just completely disabled the update service on Windows 7 (searching for and installing them).

This procedure is carried out the same way on all computers and laptops running Windows 7. The version (Home, Professional, Ultimate) or bitness (32- or 64-bit) does not affect this.

Why do you need to turn off auto-update in Windows 7?

  1. An unlicensed copy of Windows is installed. At the very least, activation may fail during the update. In the worst cases, the computer or laptop does not turn on after a reboot and you have to reinstall the OS (Microsoft developers know how to give surprises 🙂).
  2. Limited Internet. If you have a limited amount of traffic, then regular updates will cost a pretty penny.
  3. Slow internet speed. Auto-updates greatly reduce loading speed. And if yours is already small, then...
  4. Low hard drive space. Auto-updates do not take up much space, but over time they can accumulate to 10-20 GB. And if there is little space left on the hard drive, the computer (or laptop) will work slowly.
  5. You cannot turn off your PC during auto-update. This is terribly annoying (don't leave it on overnight!).

By the way, as an option, you can disable only auto-update. That is, select the 2nd or 3rd option in the Update Center settings (so that the installation decision is made by you personally).

If you don’t want Android applications to update themselves, wasting mobile traffic or loading the system at the most inopportune moment, then disable this in automatic mode. You can disable application updates in several ways through the Play Market and Android settings.

Disable individual app updates

First, let's figure out how to disable auto-update of one application. Sometimes, as a result of modernization, the program begins to work worse, so it makes sense to leave the old version. To achieve this:

As you can see, on the page of the installed application in the Play Market there is a special “Update” button. If you need to install a new version of the program manually, use it to begin the upgrade process.

Disable all app updates

Now let's see how to disable automatic updating of all installed applications in Android. To do this, you also need to go to the Play Market and call up the side menu. Next, open the “Settings” section.

Check the “Notifications” box (on some builds you need to check the “Availability of updates” item in the “Notifications” field). This option works even if you disable auto-update applications. Notifications will contain messages about the release of a new version. After reading it, you will have to make a decision: make changes, or let the program remain as it currently works.

The second settings item is “Auto-update applications”. Click on it to expand the list of available values. You will see three options:

  • Never – a complete ban on auto-updates. You can only update manually via the Play Market.
  • Always - new versions of programs are downloaded. It doesn't matter what type of connection is used: mobile Internet or Wi-Fi. Selecting this mode will lead to the fact that mobile traffic will be very quickly wasted on downloading updates.
  • Only via Wi-Fi. Programs are updated only if the phone goes online by connecting to a Wi-Fi point. If the device uses mobile Internet, then auto-update is disabled, that is, traffic is not spent on downloading updates.

Most users choose to update only via Wi-Fi, but you can completely cancel downloading updated versions, however, in this case you risk being left without new features added by the program developers.

Disable system update

Not only installed applications are updated, but also built-in programs and the system itself. Therefore, to figure out how to completely prohibit updating applications on Android, you need to perform a few more manipulations with the mobile device.

Here, too, it is possible to update the firmware manually or set that updates can only be downloaded when connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi.

Many users are wondering how to refuse to install a firmware update if the phone has already downloaded it and now insists on installing it, displaying notifications. The easiest way is to ignore the presence of an update on your device and turn off notifications.

To prevent the update from taking up space, you can delete it. To do this, the mobile device must have superuser (root) rights. In addition, you need the Root Explorer file manager. If these requirements are met, then to remove the downloaded update, just go to the system directory /cache/ and erase the update.zip file. In some cases, the update file is located directly in the root of the memory card. In any case, even after uninstallation, the system will no longer try to download new firmware on its own.

By default, applications installed through the Play Market are updated automatically in all versions of Android. Very few versions of the operating system automatically update the software. But any user can switch to manually updating applications and software.

How to activate or deactivate automatic software updates

The software updates itself only in unofficial Android builds. In other versions of the operating system, it must be updated manually by default.

Deactivating automatic software updates

But if you are faced with the fact that the software updates automatically, then follow these steps to prevent it from doing so:

Activating automatic software updates

To enable auto-update, follow the three steps above, but in the last one, do not deactivate, but rather activate automatic software update.

Manual software update

If you have disabled automatic software updates, it is recommended that you constantly check for new versions manually.

How to enable or disable automatic app updates

Only programs installed from the Play Market update independently. Applications installed from the .apk file are updated only by deleting the old version and installing a new one.

To enable or disable self-updating of programs, you need to follow these steps:

Manually updating programs from the Play Market

If you have disabled automatic receipt of new versions of applications, you will need to download them manually. Otherwise, some applications will refuse to work or will not receive new features added with updates.

You can manually update the application like this:

Possible problems when updating applications

When updating applications manually or automatically, the following problems may occur:

You can enable or disable automatic app updates on Android at any time. The same can be done with self-updating software, if such a function is present in your firmware. After deactivating automatic updates, do not forget to manually update the system and applications.

A guide to the basic methods how to disable updates on Android. On any mobile device and tablet running Android, regardless of the device model and OS version, the automatic update function for downloaded applications and the system as a whole is enabled by default.

On the one hand, this is convenient, since it allows users to always be aware of useful new products, but on the other hand, it can be very annoying.

Why disable updates?

Inexperienced users of Android smartphones do not understand the point of turning off updates, since the system itself performs all the necessary actions. However, in many cases such a decision is quite justified:

  • Auto-downloading updates takes a lot of resources from a mobile device, especially if the device itself is not powerful enough. Surely many have encountered situations when they urgently need to send a message, enter some program, but the phone “slows down” or even does not respond to any actions, because at that moment it is updating the next application.
  • Sometimes new versions of applications work worse than previous ones - disabling auto-updates will allow you to manually update only those programs that you consider necessary.
  • Many users are simply not interested in knowing what new developers have come up with - in this case, notifications about changes and the updates themselves can be annoying.

It doesn't matter why you're unhappy with this feature - if you decide to update apps yourself, I suggest using one of two simple methods.

Disable application updates in PlayMarket

To disable auto-update this way, you will need:

  • Go to the PlayMarket application.
  • Click on the menu icon - it represents three black stripes located one above the other.
  • In the window that opens, select “Settings”.
  • Click on “Auto-update applications”.
  • From the options provided, select “Never” and then click “Done”.

Android updates manually

That's all! After these manipulations, auto-downloading of updates will not occur. In the future, you will be able to update the programs you are interested in manually. To do this, you just need to go to the Play Market menu, select the “My applications and games” section, and then the “Updates” tab.

How to disable updating in your smartphone settings

The second shutdown method is even simpler. To do this you only need to perform three steps:

  • In the smartphone settings, select the “General” tab and find the “About device” section.
  • Click "Software Update".
  • In the window that opens, uncheck the box next to “Auto-update”.

Disable Android update in device settings

Ready! Now applications will not be updated without your knowledge. Both methods work flawlessly and do not affect the functionality of the mobile device in any way, so feel free to choose any option.

Disable Android update notifications

No less than the updates themselves, constant pop-up mentions of them can be annoying. To get rid of unnecessary notifications, do the following:

  • Find the Application Manager section in the Settings menu.
  • Select "GooglePlay Services".
  • In the window that appears, uncheck the box next to “Show notifications.”

Application manager in Android

That's all. As you can see, removing annoying software updates and notifications about them is not difficult. I hope you now get maximum comfort from using your mobile device!

Automatic updates of applications, such as Google play market (google play market) WhatsApp (WhatsApp) or even games on Android, 5, 5.1, 4.4, 6, 6.0, 4.2, 4.4 2, 5.1 1, 5.0 and so on, are useful, when you have fast, unlimited access to the Internet and want to always have the latest versions of programs.

Unfortunately, sometimes continuous automatic updates can create interference, especially if we want to do something on our tablet, phone, or smartphone (Samsung Galaxy, Lenovo, Sony Xperia, Alcatel) - they are “pulling the tires” in the background. How to disable them?

While it is widely believed that you should always update any software, it turns out that this is not always a good idea.

If you have a slow Internet, then it is better to control the moment when application updates occur

Moreover, people using older models of Samsung galaxy, lenovo, xiaomi, htc and others smartphones or tablets should consider whether you really want to update all programs.

Some apps, especially those released by Google, change very little over time, and the latest versions (YouTube, Gmail) can be simply heavy and slow on older devices.

Sometimes it is better to stay with an older version with fewer features and not have unnecessary problems with them.

Disable automatic downloading of application updates on Android

NOTE: the pictures below were taken on a Samsung Galaxy smartphone with Android 6.0.1 (it’s the same for Android 5.1, there may be some discrepancies on others, but the principle is the same)

To remove updates, go to the Play Store, and then click on the “three stripes” option in the top left.

Now select Settings.

If you haven’t changed anything yourself, then the first thing you will see (at the very top) is “Auto-update applications”, and just below “Only via WI-FI”.

This means that software updates will only occur wirelessly, but not via cellular communications.

Click on it. You will see different options. Place a check mark (big black dot) next to the word “Never”.

From now on, updates will not be downloaded automatically, but you will still have information about them in the status bar. It can also be removed if desired.

Manually updating Android applications

If you turn off automatic app updates, they will no longer load. However, there are several programs that must be up to date or they may not work.

Then you can easily update the selected applications manually. To do this, go to the play store and click on the upper left corner (three bars).

Now notice the options menu that pops up and select “My apps and games.”

After a while, you will see on the screen a list of downloaded and installed programs and games on your phone.

If an update is available for one of them, you will find an Update button next to it (on the right side).

Just don’t click the button at the top “update all” - then everything that was previously excluded will be loaded - it would be pointless to disable their automatic updating.

That's all. There is really one more point. System updates, or rather firmware. This can also be turned off, although it's a little more complicated. Good luck.
