If you are interested in the topic of iPhone repair at home, you should remember that you are doing this at your own risk. Not only does your phone, after being disassembled outside of an Apple service center, lose its warranty - you may accidentally damage or incorrectly install one of the gadget’s components. Finally, Apple devices are quite difficult to disassemble on your own; manufacturers assume that you will only service them at company centers.

If you are not frightened by this warning, and you are firmly convinced that you want to learn how to disassemble an iPhone at home, move on.

In this text we will look at how to disassemble iPhone 4s, 5, 6.

We disassemble iPhone 4s

First, make a backup copy of your iPhone, because you may need to restore it after reassembling it. iTunes will help you make a copy. Be sure to remember the order of disassembling the device parts, or better yet, lay out the phone parts strictly in the order they were during disassembly and take photographs of each stage. Pay special attention to screws of different sizes - they should also be left in an order that is understandable to you, so as not to get confused during assembly.

  • First of all, remove the SIM card slot and the card itself from the device. To do this, you will need an original paper clip from the iPhone set, but if you don’t have one, an ordinary paper clip will do.
  • There are screws on both sides of the charging connector - unscrew them.

  • The cover hiding the battery must be moved up and disconnected. To the left of the battery, in the corner there is a small protective plate that hides access to it. Remove these two screws as well.

  • Now you can see the connector that goes to the battery. It must be carefully removed. Remove the battery by pulling the small plastic tab.

  • In the upper left corner you can see an S-shaped protective plate, it is held on by 5 round screws. Unscrew them.

  • The protective plate hides six cables underneath, they all need to be disconnected. Do not bend them or squeeze the cables too tightly!

  • Five of the plumes are located on the surface and are completely visible, but the sixth is covered and will be accessible after removing these five. Disconnecting the leftmost cable allows you to remove the phone's camera. At the same stage of disassembly, you will have access to a screw in the upper right corner, unscrew it.

  • When you remove the phone camera, unscrew three more screws. Two of them are located one above the other, under the plastic tab (which we used to remove the battery), and the third is on the left, to the side of them. If you connect these screws with imaginary lines, you get - ⅃.

  • Now you have come to the point of removing the battery cable; it is relatively large, but to remove it it will be enough to lift it up.

  • Below, on the right, is the next screw that needs to be removed. It is located at the very edge of the phone body. Now proceed to disconnect the antenna cable located on the left. Its type is different from the previous connectors, but it connects in a similar way. This train must be carefully lifted. After this, the antenna and bell unit at the bottom of the iPhone will detach without any additional effort. This is a black, elongated part.

  • Moving the orange cable aside, you will see another screw.
  • Unscrew two pairs of screws. First pair below. Here one screw was under the orange cable, and the second was located a little higher, on the right.
  • The second pair of screws is located at the top of the iPhone case. The first one is next to the camera slot, in the upper right corner of the slot. The second is on the same level as the first, 3 centimeters to the right.

  • Thus, we have freed the motherboard of the device and can dismantle it. The motherboard is a single block with circuits that runs through the entire body of the phone. There is a washer-shaped part next to the orange cable and it will also need to be removed. Please note that it is attached with double-sided tape, so it will require some effort to detach. Do not overdo it!

  • The next step is to remove as many as 10 screws holding the iPhone 4S module in place. Four of them are located in the corners, and the rest are located on the right and left edges of the iPhone frame. Please note that the 6 screws on the side are a different size and there are washers on the back.

  • There are still some screws left after this operation, but there is no need to remove them at this stage.
  • We run a specially prepared tool (pick, plastic spatula) along the screen so that it detaches.

  • To replace the display module with touchscreen, the available description is sufficient.

  • To replace the iPhone 4S Home button, slide the black slider to the right. If you want to remove the iPhone 4S Home button, slide the black slide to the right. It is located above the charging connector. By the way, you need to remove it too; to do this you will have to unscrew two round screws. It is now possible to remove the long orange train.

  • The remaining connectors, including the cable from the phone's start button (located on top) and the volume buttons, will be disconnected if you unscrew the last screws.

This video clearly shows how to completely disassemble an iPhone 4 and replace the screen

We disassemble iPhone 5

  • First of all, unscrew the back cover of the device and remove the screen.

  • To do this, you need to unscrew a couple of small screws on different sides of the device’s charging connector. Finding them is not at all difficult.

  • Next, using a vacuum suction cup, remove the screen. The operation can also be performed using a small plastic spatula or mediator. In this case, you need to hook the screen from below and then lift it. When performing this action, you need to be as careful as possible so as not to split or scratch the display.

  • The iPhone 5 also often has a problem with easily erasable paint. When disassembling your phone, you need to remember this at every stage of work.

  • After lifting the display, disconnect it from the main circuit block - the motherboard. Please note that the units of the device are quite tightly connected.
  • After unscrewing the last bolt on the board, carefully lift the screen cable. Here again you will need a pick or a plastic spatula. The screen can now be completely removed.

  • Removing the battery
  • Do not skip this disassembly step under any circumstances, because further actions with the battery connected may result in electric shocks. This is not only dangerous for you, but also causes defects in other components of the phone.

  • First of all, you need to unscrew the three screws holding the protection on the battery cable.

  • To remove the battery, use the same plastic spatula. The battery may not give in to you the first time, but there is no need to worry about this. Gently pry it from different sides until the glue holding the battery comes off.

  • We take out and disassemble the Iphone 5 motherboard
  • After removing the battery, unscrew the bolts that hold the camera. There are two of them. After this, we sequentially disconnect the microphone, speaker and headphone connectors. This is followed by the screws on which the antenna cable and SIM card slot are attached.

  • When you unscrew these 5 screws and disconnect the cables, slowly remove the motherboard.

  • At this stage of disassembling the device, the iPhone 5 case can be put aside, because further manipulations occur directly with the motherboard. Remove the camera by unscrewing two screws. This unit does not have any additional fastening elements and will then be freely detached.

  • Let's move on to the vibration motor, attached with three screws. Then, to remove the lower cable of the motherboard. To completely remove the bottom cable on the motherboard, which holds the Lightning port, headset jack, speaker, Wi-Fi antenna and one of the microphones, you need to unscrew seven more screws: two at the bottom next to the headphone jack, one in the right part of the cable and four more that directly hold the entire component.

  • Removing the CPU
  • To separate the iPhone 5 processor, you will first need to remove the protective film from it.

  • Remove the parts from the front panel.
  • When you have separated the remaining elements from the back of the device, you can move on to the front.
  • The “home” button is held in place by glue; the button must be carefully pryed off with a spatula and removed

  • One of the last elements to be removed is the metal plate that protects the screen from touching other hardware parts of the device. Once the last part is removed, the iPhone 5 disassembly can be considered complete.

In this video you will learn more clearly how to disassemble an iPhone 5

iPhone 6 disassembly

Good news: iPhone 6 is easier to assemble and disassemble than its predecessors. This is undoubtedly due to the fact that the device has become thinner, but larger. Thanks to these changes, access to parts has become easier and they are housed in a more spacious housing.

You can watch the disassembly of the iPhone 6 in more detail in this video.

I would like to add a few words about the special tools that will be required to disassemble Apple smartphones.

As we have already found out, we cannot do without:

  1. Sucker
  2. Plastic pick or special paddle
  3. Tweezers
  4. Set of special screwdrivers

It is on screwdrivers that I would like to dwell in more detail, let’s look at what characteristics and design they should have so that disassembling the iPhone goes without any hitches.

As an example of an optimal set of screwdrivers for electronics repair, we suggest considering ones manufactured by VIRA.

First of all, the holder. It is made of impact-resistant plastic and has a rubber coating for easy grip. The holder is 11 cm long and can be wrapped around the palm of your hand without being too long.

Traditionally, for such holders, the presence of a rotating platform is considered important. You can press on the tool, and the body will easily rotate with your fingers.

Includes 28 bit:

  • 25 mm SL1.5,
  • SL2.0, SL3.0
  • PH000,PH00,PH0,PH1
  • T4, T5, T6, T7, T8, T10, T15, T20
  • H2.0, H4.0
  • PZ1,PZ0
  • ★0.8, 1.2, 1.5, 2.0
  • ▲, 2.0, 2.3
  • Y 2.0mm, ∪2.6mm

The listed types of bits easily allow you to repair any component of Apple devices, including the “pentalobe” slot.

Particular attention should be paid to the material of the bits and their additional processing. The material is used with high hardness so that the tips do not wear off over time, or wear less.

VIRA bits are made from chrome vanadium, a hard and durable material.

Since disassembling an iPhone involves constant work with small parts and small fasteners, it is better that the bits have a magnetic tip. This makes it easier to pick up the fastener and place it in the hole in the smartphone case.

Particular attention is paid to the placement of the kit in the packaging. Each bit is in its own cell; they are fixedly fixed and do not mix when carrying the set. The box of the kit is made of high-quality hard plastic that can withstand a fall to the floor from a human height.

For additional storage convenience, the box has a retractable hook on the back. Thanks to this, the set can be hung on the wall.

Disassembling the fifth iPhone has some of its own characteristics compared to the third and fourth models. These include the mandatory presence of a special vacuum suction cup, which is not at all necessary for disassembling previous models.

So why might you need knowledge of how to disassemble an iPhone 5? The most common reason is replacing a cracked screen. In order to install a new sensor, you will need to remove the old one. But first, you still need to figure out what the famous fifth iPhone consists of.

The main components of an iPhone

To correctly disassemble an expensive device, you need not to confuse anything in its “stuffing” and know exactly what is being removed and how, and also do not forget about the sequence of actions. Below is a list of iPhone components that will have to be dismantled in the future, or at least not damaged:

  • 4-inch diagonal display with a resolution of 1136×640 pixels;
  • single-chip system from Apple A6;
  • 8 megapixel camera;
  • eight pin connector;
  • device to support 4G LTE wireless communications.

Removing the display correctly

To remove a cracked Retina display, you first need to unscrew the two five-blade screws that are located on the bottom edge of the iPhone. After this, remove the display.

Attention: you don’t need to try to pick it up or pry it with anything! To do this, use a special tool in the form of a rubber suction cup, which can be bought in specialized stores or ordered online. Press the suction cup firmly against the display and pull it towards you. The panel remains on the suction cup and you can begin further disassembly.

Another tool you will need is a miniature pentagonal screwdriver. Only with its help can you properly unscrew all the screws in the fifth iPhone. Again, no need to try to use any other devices. Also, you should get a plastic or iron spatula in advance, with which we will pry off the connectors and modules.

Removing the display module

Below the display there are a lot of parts and screws that need to be worked on. Next we perform the following steps:

  1. Unscrew the 3 screws that secure the screen of the display module cables and remove it.
  2. Use a spatula to unclip the connector of the upper module and the sensor connector located under it.
  3. We unscrew the 3 screws and remove the screen that secures the battery connector, carefully unclip its connector and remove the battery itself.
  4. Remove the screen securing the connector of the lower module. To do this, unscrew the two screws holding it in place. Unsnap the connector.
  5. Remove the SIM tray from the side panel.
  6. We unclip the connector of the lower button cable and its cables.
  7. Unscrew the screws in the phone body and two end screws.
  8. Disconnect the cable and lift the board. Use tweezers to disconnect another cable.
  9. At the top of the board there is a screen that secures the camera module. We're filming that too.
  10. Unscrew the screws securing the lower module.
  11. Peel off the cable with the contacts of the “Home” button and remove its block.
  12. We remove the bottom cable, which has a digital connector, a headset connector and a microphone.
  13. Unscrew the Home button screen and remove the button itself.
  14. We remove the screen of the upper loop, the auditory speaker and the upper loop.
  15. We unscrew the screws that secure the display module screen and remove the metal panel.

Version in pictures

After several years of using an Apple smartphone, people are starting to wonder: how to disassemble the iPhone 5? Someone will ask: why is this necessary? There are quite a few reasons that motivate iPhone fans to do this. They can be listed almost endlessly, but we will describe only three of them, because one way or another, that’s not what you’re here for.

The first reason is to give your device a unique, fresh look. The fact is that over time, the back panel on your iPhone can get pretty frayed. And if you have a black version of the iPhone 5, then paint problems will definitely force you to do this.

The second reason is a scratched protective glass, which prevents the sensor from working properly. The third reason is hardware problems. Poor battery condition, faulty Home and Power keys, or even a broken screen.

Professional Tool Set

All these problems make us think about whether to take the iPhone to a service center or disassemble the device ourselves. A trip to the service center can hit your wallet. After all, you will have to pay for the materials and work of the master. Doing disassembly yourself is not as difficult as it seems, and besides, you can save a lot of money on it. In this article, you will learn how to disassemble the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s yourself.

So, before you begin the disassembly procedure, you must stock up on time and the necessary tools for this. A regular screwdriver is not enough here. You can buy tools for disassembling an iPhone in an online store. After purchasing all the necessary tools, you can start working.

First, turn off the device. You start the same way as in the case of the iPhone 4/4s: unscrew the 2 screws at the bottom of the iPhone 5 case. For the iPhone 5s, the disassembly procedure begins in the same way.

We take the suction cup and, with its help, lift the screen. Next, we move away the structure with the screen, but not completely. Only the part where the Home button is located. For the iPhone 5s, you will need to disconnect the cables that lead to the motherboard from the Touch ID sensor. The upper part remains connected to the rest of the smartphone with a small cable.

Having placed the screen unit vertically, unscrew the screw that holds the cable fastening. Use a plastic spatula to disconnect the cable. The screen unit is now detached from the body. If there were problems with the Home button or the cause of disassembly was a faulty speaker, screen sensor, or broken glass, then we continue to disassemble the screen unit.

To replace the speaker, you will need to unscrew 2 screws and disconnect the contacts from the screen unit. The speaker is now ready to be replaced. We remove the Home button from the bracket and replace it if it was faulty. In order to replace the glass or screen, unscrew the screw of the metal base. After this, nothing prevents you from replacing the screen or broken glass.

In order to replace the Home button in the iPhone 5s, also known as Touch ID, you need to pry it with a rubber spatula and carefully remove it.

If the problem was in the battery, the board, or you want to change the color of the case, then we continue the process of disassembling the iPhone 5. To replace the battery, you need to disconnect the cable from the board with a plastic spatula. Next, use the same spatula to pry up the battery and pull the plastic tab (on the iPhone 5s, Apple abandoned this label). We remove the battery and replace it.

The battery in the iPhone 5s can be removed immediately after disconnecting the Touch ID cable and the cable connecting the battery to the motherboard, without completely removing the screen unit.

Next, we proceed to dismantling the motherboard. However, there is no significant difference between the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s. To do this, you need to disconnect the antenna connector module from the motherboard, which is located at the bottom. The next step is to unscrew the screw securing the board to the case. After that, at the top of the smartphone we find the screws that attach the contacts to the inner wall of the iPhone 5 case. We unscrew them. The motherboard is completely free and can be removed.

If necessary, you can disconnect the camera by unscrewing 2 screws. If it was damaged or faulty, repair or replace it.

Next, we continue dismantling the bottom module, which includes a headphone jack, earpiece, bottom microphone, Wi-Fi antenna and Lightning connector. This is not difficult to do, but it will require some effort, since the entire structure is secured with glue. You can also disconnect the Lightning connector if there is any problem with it and replace it.
