Find out what kind of PC you have. Programmer Free programs for your computer, useful tips for Windows. Determining hardware data using the PowerShell dxdiag utility

A home computer, like any other technical device, has its own characteristics and operating parameters. They determine its purpose and allow flexible configuration of individual elements and the system as a whole. Every experienced user should know the general characteristics of his computer in order to use it correctly.

In our new article we will tell you how to view the characteristics of a computer on Windows 7 and 10, and also consider several convenient programs for this.

Any game or program running on a PC consumes computer system resources. In some cases, the computer may not cope with its task due to inconsistencies in the technical characteristics of the software and/or hardware. For this reason, you may observe slow operation of programs and the operating system, “brakes” and “crashes” in games, long video rendering, and unsatisfactory performance of other operations. Knowing information about a computer allows you to use it for its intended purpose and correctly configure and upgrade it.

How is PC information presented?

Since a computer is a complex computing system, its characteristics depend on the components installed in the system unit and the operating system.

Therefore, the general characteristics of a PC are represented by technical information of its components:

  • CPU: manufacturer, model, clock frequency (in MHz or GHz), number of cores and computing threads (may not be indicated in the labeling), presence and size of 3rd level cache L

For example: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X 3.6GHz/16MB – AMD processor model Ryzen 5 2600X with a base frequency of 3.6GHz per core and 16MB L3 cache.

  • Motherboard: manufacturer, model, CPU socket, chipset type, number of expansion slots and RAM, form factor, BIOS/UEFI version (may not be indicated in the labeling).

For example: Asus Rog Maximus X Hero (s1151, Intel Z370, PCI-Ex16) – motherboard from Asus Maximus X Hero model with s1151 socket, Intel Z370 chipset and PCI-E x16 slots for video cards.

  • RAM: manufacturer, memory standard, clock frequency (effective), module memory capacity.

For example: Kingston DDR4-2400 4096MB PC4-19200 HyperX Fury Black - a module from Kingston of the DDR4 standard with an operating frequency of 2400 MHz and a memory capacity of 4096MB (4GB).

  • Video card: manufacturer, PCI-Express port standard, board model, GPU type and operating frequency, video memory size and frequency, memory bus bandwidth, monitor connection interface.

For example: Palit PCI-Ex GeForce GTX 1060 Jetstream 6GB GDDR5 (192bit) (1506/8000) (DVI, HDMI, 3 x DisplayPort) – video adapter from Palit GeForce GTX 1060 model with 6 gigabytes of GDDR5 video memory operating at a real frequency of 1506MHz. Information exchange between the GPU and memory occurs via a 192bit wide bus. There are DVI, HDMI, 3 x DisplayPort ports.

  • WinchesterHDD: manufacturer, model, memory size, spindle speed with disks, cache memory size, form factor, connection interface.

For example: Western Digital Blue 1TB 7200rpm 64MB 3.5 SATA III – 3.5-inch drive from Western Digital Blue model with a speed of 7200 rpm, 64MB cache and a SATA III port.

  • Solid State DriveSSD: Almost the same characteristics as HDD except for the standard ROM memory chips.

For example: Kingston SSDNow A400 240GB 2.5″ SATAIII TLC – solid state drive of the TLC standard.

  • Operating system: manufacturer, generation, version, bit depth.

For example: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro - OS from Microsoft of the Windows 10 generation. Professional version.

How to find out the specifications on your PC?

After a brief introduction to all the main characteristics, we can find out (and most importantly, understand) the computer’s parameters using built-in Windows tools or third-party programs.

You can see the most basic information by following the path “Start/Control Panel/System and Security/System” or go to "Properties of the system" via menu "My computer". This action also applies to Windows 10.

In this window we can see only the basic parameters of the computer, including the computer name and user name, as well as the current activation code.

A more detailed description of the computer configuration is in the section "Device Manager", which is in the menu "System" in the upper left corner. The structure and principle of displaying devices are the same for Win 7 and 10. From this menu it is clear to us that the system has a quad-core processor, two hard drives and a video card with their markings indicated.

In the “ten” everything looks similar:

The current state of the computer can be checked using the built-in tool "Resource Monitor" located along the way “Start/Programs/Accessories/Utilities”. It can also be reached via "Task Manager", which is called by holding down three keys on the keyboard « Ctrl"+"Alt"+"Delete".

Here the system displays the CPU load for each core and thread, the total amount of RAM and its percentage, the load on hard drives and SSDs, the number of partitions and the amount of free space on them.

In Windows 10, you can view the above computer properties directly in "Task Manager".

The third option allows you to display comprehensive information about the properties of the system. Like all previous ones, it is identical for Windows 7 and 10. To do this, go to “Start” and enter in the search bar « dxdiag"(without quotes). The user will see a window with parameters for the system as a whole, video adapter, and sound devices.

We use the CPU-Z program

The CPU-Z program, well-known among a wide circle of users, provides maximum information about the PC and allows you to find out all the data about your processor, motherboard, RAM, and graphics adapter. This tool should be installed for every user who is interested in the subject of computer hardware and wants to fine-tune their system.

To start using CPU-Z:

First - « CPU", containing basic and special characteristics of the microprocessor, including process technology, revision, maximum power consumption, chip voltage, supported instructions and much more.

Advantages

  • Allows you to find out about all the characteristics of the main components of your computer.
  • Completely free software.
  • Quick installation and easy to use.
  • Works on any system, even the oldest.
  • Helps monitor frequencies during overclocking.

Flaws

  • There is no Russian version.
  • Compressed information about the video adapter.

Checking graphics with GPU-Z

By analogy with CPU-Z, there is a program created exclusively for the graphics adapter - GPU-Z. Let's take a quick look at it.

To check the video card or integrated video adapter:

Advantages

  • All the advantages of CPU-Z, but in relation to the video adapter.

Flaws

  • There is no Russian language.

Taking advantage of AIDA 64

Many readers will ask us: “What is the most advanced program for viewing PC characteristics?” We answer - « AIDA 64".

This magnificent tool is the successor to the best program of its kind in the world - « Everest"(which, by the way, has not been supported for a long time). Aida is suitable for everyone, without exception, from beginners to overclockers and computer engineers. AIDA 64 is good because it checks the entire system, takes readings from all sensors and provides information in a clear, convenient form in Russian. Two more advantages are the availability of technical support and frequent database updates.

Why don't we recommend AIDA 64 to everyone? It is paid. As of September 2018, the price of the program is 2,265 rubles, which makes it inaccessible to the majority of users. However, there is a 30-day trial license, which is enough to solve some technical problems with your computer.

Let's take a closer look at the capabilities of AIDA 64.

The remaining tabs are no less useful than the previous ones, but are used by most users much less often.

Advantages

  • Provides absolutely all information about the system and the specifically selected device.
  • AIDA 64 works by taking readings from sensors and providing information about the device from developer databases.
  • Despite the huge volume of displayed parameters, Aida 64 is easy to use.
  • High-quality translation into Russian.
  • Can work on any obsolete PC.

Flaws

  • The price of a home license is more than 2 thousand rubles.

Trying to work with the universal Speccy

Despite the undeniable advantages of AIDA 64, there are still several useful products that can gain popular recognition. Among these, the monitor stands out « Speccy" from a well-known company "Piriform", which created « CCleaner".

Speccy displays detailed information about the computer, its components and installed drivers. The volume of data is far from the Aida described above, but it is quite enough for the average user. With the help of Specky, you can properly configure your system and, if necessary, improve it.

The main advantage of Speccy is the availability of a free license.

To use Speccy:

Advantages

  • Quite a substantial amount of PC data provided, sufficient for the vast majority of experienced users.
  • Pleasant interface and translation into Russian.
  • Compatible with almost all systems, regardless of their generation.
  • There is a free license.

Flaws

  • This software is of little use for professional craftsmen and highly specialized tasks.
  • There is no information about installed programs.
  • There are no stress tests like in Hades.

Finally

In this article, we talked about how you can view the characteristics of a Windows computer and why you need to do it. To do this, we used standard OS tools and downloaded programs. Let's figure it out and choose the best option.

  • Standard Windows tools do not provide sufficient information about the PC hardware and software to configure it and properly upgrade it. This method is needed to roughly estimate system performance when using demanding software.
  • CPU-Z and GPU-Z programs are an excellent option for experienced people who are fairly well versed in computer systems. They are free and universal for any PC. This method will be useful for overclockers and people who want to customize or improve their computer with new components.
  • The AIDA 64 utility is positioned as software for professionals, but is also perfect for home use. It has no equal among its competitors in the accuracy and quantity of data provided. The interface also pleases with its optimization and unobtrusiveness.

Since this product costs good money, not everyone can afford it. It is worth noting that such an array of data is not needed by the average user. Therefore, this option will be really useful only to professionals: development engineers, extreme overclockers and other people with a narrow specialization.

  • The small program Speccy is an interpretation of CPU-Z in a more beautiful shell and in Russian. The accuracy of displaying data from sensors is quite high, and the technical information will suit even an experienced user. In our opinion, this option is the “golden mean”, given that the product does not cost a penny.

Each user has some idea about the characteristics of the hardware (hardware) of his personal computer. However, to install games or some specialized software products, you need to know the exact parameter values, information about the manufacturer and model of the board or chip.

To determine detailed information, we suggest using the following standard methods:

  1. Info window "System".
  2. PowerShell utility Msinfo32.
  3. Device Manager.
  4. Command processor (command line).
  5. PowerShell dxdiag utility.

Most popular third party software:

  • Everest;
  • CPU-z.

Step 1. To launch the information window, expand any directory on your personal computer, for example, the “Pictures” folder.

Step 2. On the right side of the directory window there is a link “This computer”. By right-clicking on it, or using the “Menu” system command key, open the context menu. From the list, select “Properties”.

On a note! To open the information window, you can also use the key combination “Win"+"Pause/"Break"Break").

Step 3. The information window that opens contains indicators of such hardware parts of your computer as:

  1. Manufacturer of the central processor.

How to find out information about your computer or all the information on your monitor

There are often situations when any user may need general or detailed information about a computer. This could be buying a computer second-hand or even in a store to compare the stated characteristics with the existing ones. Even more often - providing information about the system when sending messages about certain errors to a remote administrator.

There are many ways, and to collect information you can use not only third-party programs, but also built-in Windows tools. In addition, information about your computer can be collected even if you the operating system no longer works. Such commands from the console are very helpful when you need specific data, Windows is “broken,” and Maria Ivanovna, who called you for help, is silent like a Belarusian partisan during interrogation. So, next we find out:

To find out information about your computer...

First, I'll show you how to find out the approximate build date of your computer or laptop. To do this, you need to go to the cmd command line and type the command from there

In the window that appears, enter the following code, maintaining the case

DF000:FFF5

The last characters in the line are the date of birth of the computer.

So, if you need to find out information about the computer and its components, you can get it:

Walking along the path Start - My Computer (right mouse) - Properties

This is the most complete information that can be obtained from a computer using built-in tools. Using this window, you can obtain information about installed physical and software hardware, recovery settings, and visual settings. From this tab there is a direct path to the Installed Hardware Manager, which will show possible errors in the system configuration and missing drivers. In general, the first command you should use when analyzing a system.

  • Another command with which you can find out information about your computer. This time this information will be presented only about the hardware, and we will use the command console. Click

Start – Search programs and files (or Run) – cmd

In the command console, type systeminfo. You will be greeted by this window

The list is rather poor, but unlike the previous version, it is difficult to correct this information with the hands of a skilled user or an unscrupulous seller. This is information directly from the computer hardware; it is the most reliable, since it bypasses the Windows system. But don’t be alarmed if, instead of two installed processors in this window, you see one - alas, DOS was written in a time when two or more nuclear technologies did not exist...

  • The next information that can be extracted from the system is information about media devices and input devices of a computer or laptop. Everything about video, monitor, sound, and related drivers. Finally, information about the installed version of DirectX, which is so often checked when purchasing new games and compliance with the system requirements. Execute the command

Start – Run (Search programs and files) – dxdiag

We will be greeted by this window:

Navigate through the tabs in the DirectX Diagnostic Tool window. All information about the system, mouse, keyboard, monitor, network is at your service.

How to find out the motherboard model? Meet WMIC.

In general, it is the Windows Management Console Toolkit WMIC that is an invaluable assistant in cases where Windows does not start. If you need information on specific Windows nodes, these commands will help you. We'll need the console again cmd. From there we enter the command:

Wmic baseboard get product,Manufacturer,version,serialnumber

The window will immediately display information about the computer's central board in several columns:

Find out the size of RAM and everything else...

Everything is the same, only now this is the command:

Wmic MEMORYCHIP get BankLabel,DeviceLocator,Capacity,Tag

the console will return the number of installed RAM sticks with the amount of memory for each in bytes. You can ask for this information in text format. The command will look like:

Wmic MEMORYCHIP get >RAM.txt

In folder C:\Windows\System32 you will find the RAM.txt file and read everything about the memory sticks. Or you can skip searching by typing the command right away:

Start RAM.txt

Here is a list of useful WMIC commands. They can be used as follows:

  • open cmd
  • we write wmic
  • enter any of the commands

Actually, the commands themselves:

  • motherboard model - baseboard get product
  • BIOS version and name – bios get name, version
  • processor name - cpu get name
  • maximum processor speed – cpu get MaxClockSpeed
  • monitor screen resolution – desktopmonitor get screenheight, screenwidth
  • name and manufacturer of the hard drive – diskdrive get Name, Manufacturer, Model
  • OS information – OS get Version, FreePhysicalMemory, FreeVirtualMemory, LastBootUpTime, NumberofProcesses, status
  • list of installed programs – product list brief
  • uninstalling a program – product where name=”program-name” call uninstall
  • list and dates of updates – qfe get description, installedOn
  • MAC address- nic get macaddress
  • temperature on the board in Kelvin (does not work on all versions) – /namespace:\\root\wmi PATH MSAcpi_ThermalZoneTemperature get CurrentTemperature . We will discuss this point with you later.

That's all I wanted to show you. If you need much more detailed information about the installed hardware, for example, if you need to know information about the computer when replacing or adding hardware, the details provided are not enough. We will have to use special programs and utilities. These include, for example, PC Wizard or CPU-Z.

Hello friends! Today I will tell you about how to view the characteristics of a computer on Windows 7. The post is short and, in principle, there is nothing interesting here. I think everyone knows and understands how to get the necessary information about their computer. Specifically in this post, I will consider all the standard ways to obtain the characteristics of a computer running Windows 7, although they are also suitable for others. Well, shall we get started?

1. System window

What can you find out? You can find out the name of the processor that is installed in your system unit. The amount of RAM, also known as RAM. System type, as well as processor bit size, respectively. By the way, I recently wrote a post about this, I highlighted the link. Next come other characteristics, I have listed the main ones. So how do you open the “System” window? This information is given below, which consists of several ways. You can use any of them and see the characteristics of your computer.

First: I think absolutely everyone has a “My Computer” shortcut on their desktop. Using it, you can literally open the “System” window in 3-5 seconds and find out some characteristics. To do this, right-click on it, thereby calling up the context menu. Then click "Properties" and you're good to go!

By the way, if the shortcut is created artificially, then the window that you would like to see will not open. How to determine? It’s easy to determine: if the shortcut actually has a shortcut icon, then, alas, nothing will work. If the shortcut is displayed as *.exe files, then everything will work out. To create such a shortcut not a shortcut, use the fourth method. There I described a little what and how it’s done.

Second: You can open it using the Control Panel. There are several ways to open the Control Panel. For example, through the Start menu or enter the command control in cmd. After opening, you need to click on “System and Security” and click on “System”. This is if you have a display in the form of “Categories”, but if there are “Large” or “Small” icons, then immediately find and click on “System”. This will open the properties window.

Third: Via search in Start. Open and write the word “System” and select the desired search result.

Fourth: Again through the Start menu. You need to open and right-click on the word “Computer” and select “Properties”. By the way, there is a “Display on desktop” option, if the “My Computer” shortcut is created artificially, then click. A new icon will appear on the desktop, and the old one can be deleted. This is the same information that I promised in the first paragraph.

2. Device Manager

Device Manager is a Windows component that includes information about connected devices. Using it, you can update or remove the drivers of these devices, determine and change the operating parameters of any device. You can also find out whether the connected components are working correctly. In a word, good stuff.

How to start? This is almost a rhetorical question, since I answered it in the first paragraph. That is, you will need an open “System” window in which you need to click on the “Device Manager” link on the left. You can also open it using the Start menu by searching for “Device Manager.” This component is also launched using the command mmc devmgmt.msc in cmd or in “Run” (Win + R).

3. System information

System Information is a Windows component (msinfo32.exe) that includes information about software (including drivers) and system components. You can also see hardware configuration information.

How to start? I answer. As always, through the “Start” menu by typing “System Information” into the search bar. Via the command line by typing the command msinfo32 or in “Run” (Win + R) by typing the same command there.

4. DirectX Diagnostic Tool

Also a good option, and most importantly standard. What does standard mean? I use this word often. If we are talking about Windows, then standard means already available. In this case it concerns programs. They are already available and you don’t need to go online and download anything.

So how to launch? Very simple! In the command line, also known as cmd, or in “Run” (Win + R). Command to run: dxdiag. I will not describe what information can be obtained, since everything is visible in the screenshot above. Besides, you can run in and look there yourself.

5. Using third-party programs and more

I like this option better because it gives better results. The methods above can also be useful. For example, if you need to look at the characteristics of the computer at your work place, but there are no programs at hand. Although who’s stopping you from downloading a portable version of a program in advance and putting it on a flash drive for later use. Also not a bad option, but I think no one carries storage drives with them. Although if the work requires it, then of course yes, but if not, then I don’t think so.

I will not talk about this or that program. I’ve already given up because it’s easier to give a link. Therefore, if anyone is interested, take a look. There I reviewed 3 programs, namely: Aida64, Speccy, CPU-Z. Although I considered it rather rudely, I rather mentioned them and provided download links. Follow the link that I indicated just above in this paragraph. You will get right where you need to go and there will be no need to go down the article. What you need will open.

There is another way to get information, but only specifically about Windows 7. I didn’t highlight a whole point on it, since there’s nothing there at all. In general, launch the command line (cmd.exe) and enter this command there: . I screenshotted the result, see below. Perhaps this will be useful to someone.

This is where I will end my post. Thank you for reading to the end. If you have any questions or want to add anything, be sure to write in the comments. No one will be left without an answer. If you don’t want to miss the news from my blog, you can subscribe to it.

I was with you, bye everyone.

System information stores information about the computer's hardware components - processor, video card, hard drive, as well as software components. You can view the Windows version, amount of RAM, PC performance index and other data using standard OS programs or third-party software.

When you need data about the characteristics and properties of a computer

For a computer program to work, the system must meet the developer's requirements. Some programs work perfectly with Windows 7 32-bit and 2 GB of RAM, while others require at least 4 GB of RAM and a version of Windows 7 64-bit. Knowledge of system parameters is useful in the following cases:

  • when purchasing a new computer to evaluate performance;
  • when installing programs and games, updating drivers;
  • when selling PCs to inform buyers;
  • to correct system failures;
  • for PC repair when replacing hardware components.
  • How to find out system settings and PC information using Windows 7

There are 6 ways to obtain information about the system using Windows - among them you will find simple methods for beginners and more labor-intensive ones for experienced users.

    Via "Control Panel"

The easiest way to get information about Windows properties and performance is through the Control Panel:

  • Open "Start" - the button at the bottom left of the screen.
  • Find “Computer” and right-click on it.
