3. Launch the application.
4. Using the built-in file manager, go to the directory where the archive is located.
5. Double click on the file you want to unzip.

Until recently, it was believed that ZIP archives could initially be created exclusively using an archiver called WinZIP, popular at the dawn of the development of computer technology.

Yes, indeed, at that time there was no alternative to this application, but with the advent of such powerful utilities as WinRAR and 7-Zip, the main program seemed to fade into second place, since archives of this format could be created and unpacked using new tools. But today WinZIP is also capable of accepting many other formats, but there is nothing wrong with using this particular program.

For standard data extraction, you can use a regular double-click on the archive, indicating the final unpacking location. If you need to decide how to extract a file from a ZIP archive (we are talking about just one object, if there are several of them in the archive), you should first launch the program, open the desired ZIP file in it, select the desired object in the contents, and then specify the location to save the extracted file.

Standard tools for Windows systems

Relatively recently, a built-in tool for decompressing archived data appeared in Windows systems. In fact, this is nothing more than the same WinZIP archiver, which has migrated to the standard set of the operating system (it is built into Explorer).

7-Zip is a relatively young program. However, it is in many ways superior to classic utilities, and files created with its help sometimes cannot be unpacked using standard tools.

This is only due to the fact that it can use those additional compression and encryption algorithms that are disabled or simply absent in the standard settings of other applications.

Unpacking archive with password

Now a few words about how to extract a file from a ZIP archive with a password. In the simplest version, you just need to enter it into a special field before starting the decompression process. Then a folder within a folder will be created, this brings minor inconvenience, but less than the mixed up files in the first option.
• The "Extract files..." menu sub-item allows you to select the optimal unzipping settings: specify the exact path along which unzipping should be carried out, and determine the settings with which files with the same names will be replaced if there are any in the archive and in the final folder.

Other forms

There are some other types of archives. For example, WinRar allows you to create self-extracting archives. In order to extract files from them, you simply double-click on them with the left mouse button. A menu will open, the same as when installing any application. You will be asked to select the path to carry out the unpacking.

Another possible option is multi-volume books. How to unzip a file embedded in a multi-volume archive? If the creator of the archive decided that the final size might be too large, he could split it into several parts. And not just by packing the files separately, but by creating a multi-volume archive that can be downloaded in parts. You can unpack such an archive in parts, but it would be better to download all the archive files. Then, when unpacking, all volumes will be defined in the same location.

Disk image

There is another file format that can be opened by an archiver. When creating a disk image with Nero Burning Rom, the files are in iso format. How to unzip an iso file? Just like a regular archive. This method only works with the ZIP format. For other formats, you must use a third-party archiver.

Unpack using 7-zip

Download the free 7-zip program. For 32-bit or 64-bit. It will allow you to quickly and easily unpack various archive formats. Check the bit depth in your computer's specifications.

Once installed, a 7-zip tab will appear in your context menu. Go into it and select “Unpack” as in the image below.

In the window, specify the extraction path ( its default location).

The files will appear in the location you specified.

Unpack using Winrar

Winrar is a very convenient program and works with all extensions. It is paid, but has a free trial period of 40 days. Then you will be constantly shown a window about purchasing a license. In general, it is free to use.

Download it from the official website and install.

Unpacking in it occurs in the same way as in 7-zip. They differ in convenience and additional features.

As you can see on the left there are several additional functions that simplify your work. Confirm extraction and navigate to the unzipped files.

Unpacking a damaged archive

When unpacking, the error “The archive is damaged” appears and in order to extract the files, you will need to use the capabilities of Winrar. This error can occur even if 1 kilobyte of information is damaged, and therefore it makes sense to extract and see which files remain working.

When extracting, check the box next to “Do not delete files extracted with errors” and it will be unpacked. Look, it's on the left in the image above.

Please note that in this case, not all files will be functional.

Unpacking an archive consisting of several volumes

To do this, just collect all the volumes into one folder and unpack the first volume. Others in the chain will unpack after him.

Please note that all volumes must be present and should be extracted using the same archiver program that created them. Then everything will go well.
