How to connect the Internet through a router?





Using a router or, as it is also called, a router, you can create a local network in your apartment that will distribute the Internet to all technical devices connected to it.

Today we will look at how to connect the Internet via a router yourself.

Equipment and device of the router

Router equipment

Open the box and check the contents. The router package should include the following: the device itself, an adapter (power supply), an Ethernet network cable (RJ-45 connector), a disk with drivers and installation program, and a guide for setting up the router. In this case, we will not need the installation disk, since we will set all the settings ourselves.

Router device

Turn the router over so the back panel is facing you and look at the ports. Typically the device contains five connectors, four of which are the same color. These inputs are called LAN ports and are intended for connecting equipment with which you want to access the global network. The fifth connector is different in color and is called WAN or Internet port. This connector is intended for connecting the Internet cable that was provided to you by the specialists of your Provider.

To the right of the Internet connector is the input for connecting the power supply. And the panel closes with a small button called “Reset”. The button is used to reset settings and reboot the router. To restart the device, you need to press the button (with a thin tip, such as a toothpick, etc.) and hold it for five seconds. When you press the "Reset" button, all configured settings are reset and the default settings are restored.

Installation, connection and configuration of the router

  1. First you need to call your Provider's technical support operator. Tell the specialist that you want to register the router and tell the specialist the MAC address of the device (the number is on a sticker on the router itself and is also written in the instructions).
  2. Determine the location of the device: the router can be installed directly in the room where the computer is located, or hung on the wall, for example, in the hallway. When installing the router, make sure that there is a 220-volt power outlet nearby.
  3. Then connect the power supply to the router and plug the device into a power outlet.
  4. Connect the Internet cable to the WAN connector.
  5. Connect the network cable to one of the LAN ports on the router, and on the other side to the corresponding input on the computer or laptop.
  6. After connecting the device, we proceed to setting it up.

Settings

  1. Click "Start", go to "Control Panel", select the "Network Connections" tab and go to "Local Area Connection".
  2. Right-click on the connection icon and select "Properties".
  3. Then click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click on the "Properties" button.
  4. Check the appropriate boxes to automatically configure IP and DNS addresses.
  5. Depending on the operating system, the progress of setting up IP and DNS may differ. (Click the "Start" button and select "View network connections." Next, select your connection type and go to the "Local Area Connection" section. Go to "Properties" and select "Internet Protocol Version 4." Then through the "Properties" button "go to the next window and check the appropriate boxes to automatically configure IP and DNS addresses).
  6. Next, find the device’s IP address in the router’s instructions. For most manufacturers, the router has an IP address of 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1.
  7. Enter the IP into the address bar of the browser and press the "Enter" key.
  8. In the window that appears, you must enter your username and password. The data also needs to be found in the manual for using the router. For most models, the username is admin, the password is admin, or an empty string (that is, the password field remains empty).
  9. Then again you need to dial the Provider operator and find out the following settings characteristics: connection type, server, username and password. Also find out if there are additional settings available.
  10. After entering the default username and password, you need to go to the “Setup” section and select the “Internet Setup” tab.
  11. Then click on the “Manual Internet Connection Setup” button and write down all the settings that the specialist dictated to you.
  12. After entering the settings, click the "Save" button.

Many users are intimidated by setting up a Wi-Fi router on their own, and when purchasing it, they also order a service to connect and configure it.

In my opinion, the price for this service in many stores is too high (sometimes up to half the cost of the router) - especially since many can cope with this operation on their own (you just need to figure it out a little).

Selecting a location and placing the router

Many users make one mistake - namely, they place the router next to the computer (for example, on the system unit). No, for testing and initial setup this is acceptable, but for continuous operation of the device this is not good in all cases.

The fact is that depending on where your Wi-Fi router is placed, the level of network reception in different parts of your home will greatly depend. Significantly reduce the Wi-Fi signal: load-bearing thick walls, mirrors, metal doors, etc.

Therefore, you need to position the router so that it is approximately equidistant from all devices that will connect to its network (and also so that there are minimal obstacles to the network signal). An example of unsuccessful and successful placement of a router in a 2-room apartment is shown in the layout below.

In general, I think the message is clear: depending on the location of the router, the quality of the network signal, speed, errors, etc. will depend.

Connecting the router to the computer

A typical router delivery consists of (example in the picture below):

  • the router itself;
  • power supply;
  • network cable (usually 1-2 m long). Used to connect the router to a PC (laptop) and configure it;
  • operating instructions;
  • antenna (there may not be an antenna - in some routers it is built into the device body).

Those. there is everything you need to start connecting and setting up the device.

The connection itself comes down to the following:

  1. Connect the router with a network cable (which comes with the router) to a computer or laptop. By the way, please note that the router, as a rule, has 4 LAN ports for this (most often marked in yellow). On some routers, the marking may be Ethernet instead of LAN;
  2. disconnect the Internet cable (coming from the provider) from the computer system unit and connect it to the router: to the WAN or Internet port (usually marked in blue);
  3. connect power to the router and turn on the device;
  4. If everything is done correctly, various LEDs on the device will begin to blink...

If shown schematically, the Wi-Fi router becomes like an intermediary between your computer and the Internet cable from the provider (see picture below).

Important! Connecting the router to a PC (laptop) using a network cable is necessary for the initial setup of the device. Subsequently, the cable can be disconnected and the router placed in a more convenient place.

Configuring network card settings

Before you go into the Wi-Fi router settings, you need to correctly configure the network card (especially if you previously had different default settings).

First you need to open a tab in the control panel - Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections . The easiest way to do this is to press the Win+R button combination, enter the command ncpa.cpl and click OK.

Then you need to open select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and open its properties.

In the "General" tab, set to obtain an IP address and DNS server automatically. Save settings.

Such settings are suitable in 99.9% of cases, because... your Wi-Fi router has an active DHCP server looking into the local network - which will give a free IP address to your computer/laptop.

Entering the router settings (device IP address)

To go into the settings of a Wi-Fi router, you need to know its IP address (which you just need to enter into the address bar of your browser and go to it).

Each router has its own IP address for settings. In most cases he 192.168.1.1 , but there are exceptions:

  1. address for D-Link and NetGear routers: 192.168.0.1 ;
  2. address for TrendNet routers: 192.168.10.1

Important! Also pay attention to the stickers on the body of your Wi-Fi router - almost always the IP address is indicated on these stickers. By the way, on the same stickers you can find the login password for accessing the web interface.

After you enter correct IP address to enter the router settings and press Enter - you will see a window asking you to enter your login and password (example in the figure below).

As a rule, in most cases both the login and password will be admin. If you can't log in, try leaving the password field blank.

Setting up a router (router)

If the password and login were entered correctly, then you should be taken to the web interface (with a bunch of different settings, links, etc.). Each manufacturer and different router models have a different interface.

But there is one thing in common: the menu is usually located on the side or on top. The basic settings in the menu are also identical and are set in a similar way. So, having looked at how one router is configured, you can configure another by analogy...

As an example, I’ll take such a popular brand of routers as TP-LINK (with "green" firmware in Russian).

Cloning the MAC address of an old network card

The fact is that many providers charge extra. protection that checks the MAC address. And if the MAC address does not match (or has been replaced) - access to the network is blocked.

To clone a MAC address, in TP-LINK routers you need to open the “MAC Address Clone” link (in the “Network” section). If you have an English version of the firmware, then look for a link like "MAC Clone".

Setting up Internet access

Setting up Internet access mainly depends on the network design of your Internet service provider. The necessary parameters for accessing the network must be specified in the contract for the provision of Internet connection services. Most often, PPPoE is used in Russia (note: a dynamic IP address is issued upon connection. To access you must enter your login and password).

It is impossible to open the WAN (Internet) tab in the router and first specify the connection type (for example, PPPoE, see “2” in the figure below). It is also necessary to indicate username and password (see “3” in the figure below, data can be taken from the agreement with the Internet provider).

All that remains is to save the settings. In most cases, you do not need to enter anything else. Now the router can access the Internet - and the Internet should now appear on the computer that is connected to it with a network cable.

Setting up a Wi-Fi network

To set up a Wi-Fi network, you first need to open the "Wireless Settings" tab (or in English "Wireless Settings"). In this tab you need to specify the network name - i.e. the name of the network that you will look for to connect on your gadgets: tablets, phones, etc. (in some cases, if there is a bad signal, it makes sense to select a channel.).

Then you need to open the “Wireless Network Protection” tab (or in English "Wireless Security") and select the type of protection. Today, one of the best types of encryption is WPA2-PSK, which is the first in the list (we select it).

PSK password is the password that you will need to enter when connecting to a Wi-Fi network.

Actually, after saving the settings, the router will reboot, and then you can connect to the Wi-Fi network and use the Internet.

I understand that in this article I did not consider many subtleties that in particular cases can have a great impact on the operation of the network. But, probably, all of them cannot be provided for in one article.

Today we will talk about how you can connect Wi-Fi to a computer via a network cable. After you have installed an Internet cable and connected a Wi-Fi router to it, you can start creating your own small local network. Surely you have not only a desktop computer (or maybe more than one), but also a tablet, a laptop, a smartphone, and a plasma TV. And all this can be combined into one network with each device connected to the Internet.

This way, your entire family can enjoy the Internet at their own discretion without disturbing each other. Someone will play online games on the computer, someone will watch their favorite films or videos from YouTube on TV, someone will work or communicate via the Internet on a laptop, and someone at this time can communicate via WhatsApp or Viber via mobile phone or smartphone. And all these pleasures can be configured with one access point via a Wi-Fi router.

And in order to create (deploy) such a grid, you must use one of two connection options:

  1. Lay a network cable from the router to a desktop computer and TV.
  2. Connect a desktop computer via an external or internal Wi-Fi adapter. Moreover, laptops, tablets and smartphones already have this adapter built-in.

In this article we will look at the first connection option.

Previously, the Internet could only be connected through a telephone line. Now this can be done using a network cable (twisted pair). For this:

  • Connect the provider's wire to the wi-fi router into the socket labeled WAN(or Internet);


  • Insert the twisted pair network cable into one of the connectors LAN. Which one doesn’t matter;
  • Connect the second end of the cord to the computer (or laptop) into the connector RJ 45. If the computer is turned on, the light next to the connector should blink.

The network cable can be connected both when the router is turned on and when the computer is turned on. It is safe.

If the Internet does not connect

Typically, a computer with the Windows 7/8/10 operating system automatically receives an IP address and immediately connects to the Internet. But you may have to make some adjustments yourself.

If connecting to the Internet did not occur automatically, then perform the following manipulations:

  1. Check if your Wi-Fi router is turned on;
  2. Check whether the network cable is well connected to the connectors of the router and computer;
  3. Check the visibility of the network card in Device Manager. If there is no entry in Device Manager " Network adapters", this means you need to install or reinstall the network card driver.
  1. Turn off the router for 30-40 seconds and turn it on again. This usually helps.

If, after the above manipulations, the Internet still does not connect, then you need to manually register the IP address for your network card.

For this:

  • Right-click on the network connection icon on the taskbar. It is located near the clock), and select " Network Sharing Center».

  • If this icon is not on the taskbar, then open Control Panel.

In order to be able to organize a wireless Wi-Fi network at home and provide Internet access to all mobile devices (laptops, tablets, phones, etc.), you need a router (even many novice users are already aware of this). True, not everyone dares to connect it and configure it themselves...

In fact, most people can do this (I don’t take into account exceptional cases when an Internet provider creates such a “wild” with its own parameters for accessing the Internet...). In this article I will try to answer all the most common questions that I heard (and hear) when connecting and setting up a Wi-Fi router. So let's get started...

1) What router do I need, how to choose it?

Perhaps this is the first question that users who want to organize a wireless Wi-Fi network at home ask themselves. I would start this question with a simple and important point: what services does your Internet provider provide (IP telephony or Internet television), what Internet speed do you expect (5-10-50 Mbit/s?), and at what protocol you are connected to the Internet (for example, now popular: PPTP, PPPoE, L2PT).

2) How to connect the router to the computer?

As a rule, the router itself comes with a power supply and a network cable for connecting to a PC (see Fig. 1).

By the way, please note that on the back wall of the router there are several sockets for connecting a network cable: one WAN port and 4 LAN ( the number of ports depends on the router model. In the most common home routers, the configuration is as in Fig. 2).

The Internet cable from the provider (which was most likely previously connected to the PC’s network card) must be connected to the blue port of the router (WAN).

Using the cable that comes with the router, you need to connect the computer’s network card (where the provider’s Internet cable was previously connected) to one of the router’s LAN ports (see Fig. 2 - yellow ports). By the way, you can connect several more computers this way.

At an important moment! If you don’t have a computer, you can connect the LAN port of the router to a laptop (netbook) with a network cable. The fact is that the initial setup of the router is better (and in some cases, it is impossible to do otherwise) via a wired connection. After you specify all the basic parameters (set up a wireless Wi-Fi connection), you can disconnect the network cable from the laptop and continue working via Wi-Fi.

As a rule, there are no issues with connecting cables and power supplies. Let's assume that your device is connected, and the LEDs on it start blinking :).

3) How to enter the router settings?

This is probably the key question of the article. In most cases, this is done quite simply, but sometimes... Let's consider the whole process in order.

By default, each router model has its own address for entering the settings (as well as login and password). In most cases it is the same: http://192.168.1.1/, however, there are exceptions. Here are a few models:

  • Asus - http://192.168.1.1 (Login: admin, Password: admin (or empty field));
  • ZyXEL Keenetic - http://192.168.1.1 (Login: admin, Password: 1234);
  • D-LINK - http://192.168.0.1 (Login: admin, Password: admin);
  • TRENDnet - http://192.168.10.1 (Login: admin, Password: admin).

At an important moment! It is impossible to say with 100% accuracy what address, password and login your device will have (even despite the brands I listed above). But this information must be indicated in the documentation for your router (most likely, on the first or last page of the user manual).

4) How to set up an Internet connection in a Wi-Fi router

Before describing these or those settings, a small footnote should be made here:

  1. First, even routers from the same model range can have different firmware (different versions). The settings menu depends on the firmware, i.e. what you will see when you go to the settings address (192.168.1.1). The settings language also depends on the firmware. In my example below, I will show the settings of a popular router model - TP-Link TL-WR740N (the settings are in English, but understanding them is not so difficult. Of course, setting up in Russian is even easier).
  2. The router settings will depend on the network organization of your Internet provider. To configure the router, you need connection information (login, password, IP addresses, connection type, etc.), usually everything you need is contained in the Internet connection agreement.
  3. For the above reasons, it is impossible to give universal instructions that are suitable for all occasions...

Different Internet providers have different types of connections, for example, Megaline, ID-Net, TTK, MTS, etc. use a PPPoE connection (I would call it the most popular). In addition, it provides higher speed.

When connecting PPPoE to access the Internet, you need to know the password and login. Sometimes (as for example, MTS) uses PPPoE+Static Local: access to the Internet will be provided, after entering the password and login for access, the local network is configured separately - you will need: IP address, mask, gateway.

Necessary settings (for example PPPoE, see Fig. 4):

  1. You need to open the “Network / WAN” section;
  2. WAN Connection Type - indicate the connection type, in this case PPPoE;
  3. PPPoE Connection: Username - specify the login for accessing the Internet (specified in your agreement with the Internet provider);
  4. PPPoE Connection: Password - password (similar);
  5. Secondary Connection - here we either do not indicate anything (Disabled), or, for example, as in MTS - we indicate Static IP (depending on the organization of your network). Typically, this settings item affects access to the local network of your Internet provider. If you don’t need it, you don’t have to worry too much;
  6. Connect on Demand - establish an Internet connection as needed, for example, if the user accesses an Internet browser and requests a page on the Internet. By the way, please note that there is a column below Max idle Time - this is the time after which the router (if it is idle) will disconnect from the Internet.
  7. Connect Automatically - connect to the Internet automatically. In my opinion, the optimal parameter is what you need to choose...
  8. Connect Manually - connect to the Internet manually (inconvenient...). Although for some users, for example, if they have limited traffic, it is quite possible that this type will be the most optimal, allowing them to control the traffic limit and not go into the red.

It is also worth paying attention to the Advanced tab - in it you can set DNS (they are sometimes necessary).

Another important point - many Internet providers bind your MAC address to the network card and do not allow you to access the Internet if the MAC address has changed ( approx. Each network card has its own unique MAC address).

Modern routers can easily emulate the desired MAC address. To do this you need to open the tab Network/MAC Clone and press the button Clone MAC Address.

Alternatively, you can tell your new MAC address to your Internet provider and they will unblock it.

Note. The MAC address is something like this: 94-0C-6D-4B-99-2F (see Fig. 6).

By the way, for example in “ Billine» connection type is not PPPoE, A L2TP. The setup itself is done in a similar way, but with some caveats:

  1. Wan Connection Type - the connection type must be selected L2TP;
  2. Username, Password - enter the data provided to you by your Internet provider;
  3. Server IP-address - tp.internet.beeline.ru;
  4. save the settings (the router should reboot).

Note: Actually, after entering the settings and rebooting the router (if you did everything correctly and entered exactly the data that is needed), the Internet should appear in your laptop (computer) that you connected via a network cable! If this is the case, all that remains is to set up a wireless Wi-Fi network. In the next step, we will do this...

5) How to set up a wireless Wi-Fi network in a router

Setting up a wireless Wi-Fi network, in most cases, comes down to specifying the network name and password to access it. As an example, I’ll show the same router (though I’ll take Russian firmware to show both Russian and English options).

First you need to open the Wireless section (wireless network), see fig. 8. Next, set the following settings:

  1. Network name - the name that you will see when searching for and connecting to a Wi-Fi network (specify any);
  2. Region - you can specify “Russia”. By the way, many routers don’t even have such a parameter;
  3. Channel Width, Channel- you can leave Auto and not change anything;
  4. Save your settings.

The question of how to connect a wi-fi router to a computer is asked by users when they want to use the Internet throughout the apartment and have free access to the wi-fi network from several devices.

In addition, they are interested in how many computers can be connected.

Installing and connecting a router is a simple process, which, however, requires careful adherence to the algorithm of actions.

Router installation

Installing a router can be done in two ways:

  • via wireless network;
  • using a twisted pair (a special wire that usually comes with the device).

The second method is less preferable. In order to make a connection, three main components are required:

  1. Actually a wi-fi router;
  2. A desktop computer or laptop with an installed network card;
  3. Network cable.

If you only need a Wi-Fi router to use the Internet from a phone or tablet at home, then inexpensive router models designed for 4–6 devices are quite suitable for you.

However, still pay attention to how many computers can be connected to the network at the same time.

Advice! Special requirements for the device should be made if you plan to store data. Also, when choosing, it is worth checking what speeds the device supports; they must be gigabyte. Otherwise, working on the Internet will become very difficult.

Wired connection

Connecting a router using twisted pair is quite simple, but with such a connection its operation becomes much more complicated.

In particular, you will not be able to move the computer away from it more than a certain distance.

Therefore, this option is not applicable for laptops. But it may be a good solution if you have a desktop computer.

This wi-fi connection has its advantages. For example, it is believed that in this way the Internet causes fewer interruptions during operation.

  • First, connect an Internet cable to the router.
    Find the WAN port on the back of the device and plug the cable into it. Then take the network cable and connect it to the router into the Ethernet port, and the other end into the corresponding port on the computer.

  • Set up your router.
    Open any browser and enter the device’s IP address in the address bar. The address must be in the format . The true IP of the router can be found on the sticker on its bottom or in the technical documentation for the equipment.

After the IP is registered, the setup program will require you to enter your login and password.

Then you can change the password for convenience. After this, the main wired network settings menu opens.

Important! If you are using a wired connection, then pay attention to the number of connectors in the router. How many there are - how many computers you can connect to the device.

Wireless connection

If you intend to connect your Wi-Fi router wirelessly, you will have to set up the connection in two stages.

The first of them is the actual settings, and the second is work on network security.

  • In the router menu, open the “Wi-Fi” tab, and there find a tab called “Manual settings settings”. The names of the tabs may vary depending on the type of router, but their meaning is usually obvious.

  • In the main settings we find the SSID field. We write the network name in it. This is the name that you will see when connecting to the Internet from any device. Set the correct region in which the wi-fi network will work.
    Next, you need to select a channel for data transmission. It is better to leave the one indicated initially. However, over time it can be changed if problems arise with access to the Internet.

  • Choose wi-fi standards. It is advisable to leave the mixed ones installed by default. Now choose how many network users can connect several computers to it at the same time.
    If the number of users should not be limited, select “0”.

  • Go to the “Security” or “Security Settings” tab. In the field at the top, select the type of protection. WPA2-PSK will do. Enter the password in the “Key” field. Such measures will protect you from hacking and from those who like to use the Internet at someone else’s expense.
    Only someone who knows the password can connect the device to the network.

The advantage of this method is that you can use the Internet throughout the apartment.

And, in addition, only with this type can you connect a second, third, or more computers located far from the device to the network.

Connecting a wired network is a little easier; it requires not so much additional work with security parameters as entering data that is not always at hand.

Go to the “Network” tab in the router menu, and from there to the “Connections” tab.

Fill in the blank fields, if any. If all fields are filled in, confirm your selection.

Go to the “IP Settings” tab. Here you need to specify the LAN network address and subnet mask. This data must be specified in the contract for the provision of services by the provider.

However, sometimes this data is not provided. In this case, you can call the provider's customer support.

There you will be required to provide this information. Confirm your selection by clicking the “Save” or “OK” button.

A wired network, although more secure, is not very convenient and does not allow you to connect the Internet to a second or even several computers.

However, the choice of connection type depends solely on the user's needs.

How to connect a router to a computer

In order to connect the router to the computer, you need to connect a blue cable to one of the four blue sections. In the computer settings, the connection is configured in the Network and Sharing Center.
